The orientation of a crystal is mainly given by the indices of the zone axis that is in conventional TEM anti-parallel to the electron beam (i.e. towards the electron gun). The zone axis is specified using a stereographic projection.

Hexagonal crystals directions are specified by 3 indices ([uvw]) or 4 ([uvtw]) Weber indices.
